Emerging abstract painters: how new work is found, and how to judge it
An emerging abstract painter is an artist early in a painting career, and the label alone says nothing about quality. What lets you judge the work is evidence: repeated decisions, a surface that holds up close, and records you can check. In the Art Basel and UBS 2025 survey, collectors increasingly bought through fairs, Instagram and directly from artists.
What "emerging" covers, and how many new painters there are
Elemental Veins (Terra & Ether, 2025, 90 × 140 cm) is built in layers of pigment, metallic dust and organic texture, with metallic fragments set along a diagonal band across the canvas. The surface is the first thing to read in any new painter's work, and it is also where the word "emerging" stops helping: it describes a stage of career, not a quality of paint. Our page on what an emerging artist is sets out why a buyer should ask which definition is meant.
New names are not scarce. The Artprice report on the contemporary art market covers auction sales of works by more than 47,000 contemporary artists between July 2024 and June 2025, It states that one in five of the artists offered were auction-market debutants, often younger than 40. That counts newcomers at auction, not abstract painters specifically, and it says nothing about quality. That suggests the supply of new artists is large, so the task is selecting, not finding.

Where collectors are buying now: fairs, Instagram and direct
The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025 sampled 3,100 high-net-worth collectors in ten markets, Brazil among them, with data for 2024 and the first half of 2025. Its findings on channels:
- 58% of collectors made purchases linked to art fairs, up from 39% in 2023.
- 51% bought through Instagram, up from 43% in 2023.
- Participation in buying directly from artists more than doubled against the previous survey, while participation and spending at auction fell.
- Paintings remained the most-purchased medium and the largest by value, at 27% of fine art spending among those who bought fine art.
These are figures for wealthy collectors, not the whole market, and the survey does not say which of the artists were abstract or emerging. What it does show is that buying through fairs, online and directly from artists gained ground. The practical methods for using those routes are in how to find emerging artists before they are represented and where to buy art from emerging artists.
What to read in the painting itself
These are practical observations, not a standard. Three things can be read from photographs and a conversation with the artist.
- Repetition with change. Look for decisions that recur across paintings and for change that looks deliberate. A single strong picture cannot show this; our page on how to tell if an emerging painter is building a body of work develops the test.
- The close view. Ask for detail photographs of areas where materials meet the canvas. In the detail shown below, the pale fragments of Elemental Veins sit in a diagonal band over layered purple, red and teal pigment, with the canvas weave visible between them. A full-wall photograph cannot show that.
- Scale in numbers. Ask for dimensions in both centimetres and inches. A painting of 90 × 140 cm reads differently from one of 50 × 70 cm, and the numbers settle questions that a photograph with no furniture beside it leaves open.
Why this page lists no painters, and one example you can check
A list of names is one author's selection, made under that author's incentives; our page on how to read an "emerging artists to buy now" list sets out the questions to ask of one. This page therefore gives a method instead, and one worked example whose records can be checked on this site.
The example is Elemental Veins, by Alyne Perfeito. Its record states the series (Terra & Ether), the year (2025), the medium (mixed media with acrylic and metallic fragments on canvas), the dimensions (90 × 140 cm), the price (BRL 6,400) and the Archive ID (AP-TAE-2025-001). A buyer can set each line against the painting and the detail photograph. The record does not place the painter among others and does not rank her, and neither does this page. For comparison of method, Echo of Silence (50 × 70 cm, sculpted texture on canvas, BRL 2,400), Veil of Light (70 × 110 cm, BRL 4,700) and Quartz Seam (98 × 152 cm, mixed media with acrylic and imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf) on canvas, BRL 6,700) carry the same kind of record.
For those acquiring: scale, light, documents and shipping
Scale. Elemental Veins is a vertical format of 90 × 140 cm (35 × 55 in). In the visualisation at the top, it hangs on the wall behind a low armchair and side table, which gives the size against furniture. Ask the studio for the dimensions of any work in the units you plan with.
Light. The catalogue text describes the fragments of this work as reflecting light, so detail photographs matter. For buyers outside Brasília, additional detail photographs and video of a specific work are available on request over WhatsApp; in Brasília, parts of the collection can be seen in person by appointment.
Documents. Every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes the original, unique painting; a signed Certificate of Authenticity with the technical record and the internal Archive ID; a fiscal invoice or official receipt; an Artwork Acquisition Agreement covering transfer of ownership, copyright and image use; an artist dossier; conservation and care guidance; and professional packaging. The certificate carries a QR code to the work's official page. The list is on the acquisition page.
Shipping. The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Freight is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are any import duties or taxes in the destination country; professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available. International shipping is quoted on request (shipping). The full catalogue is in the gallery.
From the studio
From the studio: what "emerging" means here
Alyne Perfeito is an emerging Brazilian visual artist and trained architect based in Brasília. Her first documented body of work was painted in 2025 and 2026 and is organised in six series that run at the same time. Elemental Veins comes from Terra & Ether, and its catalogue text compares the composition to geological strata.
Across the series the materials and scale change, from the sculpted monochrome relief of Echo of Silence at 50 × 70 cm to the fragments of Elemental Veins at 90 × 140 cm and the imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf) of Quartz Seam at 98 × 152 cm. What the studio keeps constant is the record: every painting is unique, signed, catalogued under an Archive ID and photographed in detail before it leaves. That is the claim on this page, and it can be checked against the works.
Frequently asked
What is an emerging abstract painter?
An emerging abstract painter is an artist early in a painting career whose work is non-representational. As the published definitions collected on our page on what an emerging artist is put it, the term describes a stage of career, not a grade of quality. Because there is no single standard, a buyer should ask which definition is meant, then judge the work through repeated decisions, the surface up close and the records that come with it.
What should I look at in an emerging abstract painter's materials and scale?
Ask what each painting is made of, how large it is in centimetres and inches, and for detail photographs of the surface. At Perfeito Studio, most works are large-format mixed media on canvas, built in layers of texture and mineral pigment; Water & Bloom is a series of smaller framed works in watercolour and acrylic on paper. The record of each work states its medium and size.
Where are collectors buying new work today?
The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025, covering 3,100 high-net-worth collectors, found that 58% made fair-linked purchases and 51% bought through Instagram, and that buying directly from artists more than doubled in participation. Auction participation and spending fell. The survey does not single out abstract or emerging artists.
Is a list of emerging abstract painters the best way to find them?
A list is one author's selection, made under that author's incentives, so it shows who one person chose, not who is good. A method gives you something checkable: decisions that repeat across several paintings, the surface seen up close, and records you can set against the work. This page gives a method and one example whose records can be checked on this site, without ranking anyone.
What documents should come with a painting from an emerging artist?
Ask for the price in writing, a signed certificate of authenticity with the technical record, and an invoice or official receipt. At Perfeito Studio every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes the original, unique painting, a signed Certificate of Authenticity with an Archive ID, a fiscal invoice or receipt, an acquisition agreement, an artist dossier and care guidance.
