Horizontal and panoramic abstract paintings: over the sofa, bed and sideboard
A wide canvas suits a wall that follows a horizontal line: a sofa, a bed, a sideboard. Match the painting to about two thirds to three quarters of the furniture's width. Amber Strata, 150 x 100 cm (59.1 x 39.4 in), is the studio's only landscape-format original, and a wide format rather than an extreme panorama.
When a horizontal format is the right call
Furniture sets a line on the wall. A sofa, a headboard and a sideboard are all wider than they are tall. In the studio's experience, a painting that repeats that proportion sits quietly above them, while a tall canvas pulls the eye upward and leaves the width of the furniture unanswered. If the wall is long and low, with a window or a ceiling beam above it, a horizontal work is usually the easier fit.
This is a matter of composition, not a rule. A vertical painting can work well above a sofa when the wall is tall or the piece is hung to echo a doorway; horizontal is simply the format that asks the fewest questions of a wide, low wall.
Sizing the width: sofa, bed and sideboard
The studio's working rule of thumb is that the painting should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of the width of the furniture beneath it. Applied to a 150 cm (59 in) canvas, that points to furniture about 200 to 225 cm (79 to 89 in) wide. On much narrower furniture, a 150 cm canvas starts to look oversized; on much wider furniture, it starts to look undersized.
- Over a sofa: a sofa around 2 to 2.25 m (6.5 to 7.4 ft) wide is a natural partner for a 150 cm work. On a longer sofa, consider a second piece or a larger canvas instead of stretching one painting to fill the wall.
- Over a bed: measure the headboard, not the mattress. By the same rule of thumb, a 150 cm painting suits a headboard of about 200 to 225 cm, which leaves a margin of wall on each side.
- Over a sideboard or console: the same proportion applies, so a sideboard of roughly 200 to 225 cm is the match. Leave room for lamps or objects, which change the visual width of the arrangement.
For height, the studio's rule of thumb is a gap of roughly 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 in) between furniture and frame, so the two read as one composition. Over a sofa, the centre of the painting is often best a little lower than most people hang a canvas when they are standing to do it, closer to the eye level of someone seated. For a bed or a sideboard that nobody sits at, a slightly higher centre is fine. Test with paper and tape before drilling; the same method is described in our guide to large abstract paintings for a living room.
What panoramic means here
Amber Strata measures 150 x 100 cm, a ratio of 3:2. That is a wide, landscape-oriented canvas, but not a panorama in the strict sense, where the long side is at least twice the short one. A true panoramic format would be something like 200 x 100 cm, and the studio does not currently list a work in that proportion.
Every other original in the studio is vertical or square, so if you are searching for an extreme panoramic canvas, this is the limit of what is available. If a wide, calm, landscape-oriented original is what you need, Amber Strata is the work to look at.
Amber Strata as a reference
Amber Strata (2026), from the Terra & Ether series, is mixed media with acrylic on canvas, catalogued under Archive ID AP-TAE-2026-004 and priced at R$ 6.700 (Brazilian Real). Alyne Perfeito builds the surface in horizontal bands of earthy ochre, pale bone and deep umber tones, with dark marks and flecks of warm gold. The horizontality belongs to the painting itself, not only to its shape: the eye moves sideways across layers, as it does along a rock stratum or a slow shoreline.
Because it is an original, the painting is unique, with a layered physical surface that a reproduction does not carry. The studio sells originals only. Details, photographs and current availability are on the Amber Strata page, and the guide to looking at an abstract painting is a useful companion for judging a wide canvas on screen before you decide.

From the studio
I trained as an architect before I became a painter, and I still read a wall the way I read a plan: first the horizontal lines, then what sits on them. A sofa, a headboard or a sideboard sets a datum, and the painting has to answer it. That is why Amber Strata is wide. I painted it in horizontal passages so that the surface behaves like a section cut through sediment, and the format follows the logic of the image.
I paint most of my work vertically, and I keep Amber Strata as the exception on purpose. A horizontal canvas at this scale is a different decision from a vertical one: it asks for a long, low wall and some distance to step back. If your wall is that kind of wall, the format suits it. If it is not, tell us and we will say so plainly.
Frequently asked
Is a horizontal painting better over a sofa?
Usually, yes. A sofa is a wide, low object, and a horizontal canvas repeats that line instead of competing with it. The width matters more than the orientation: aim for about two thirds to three quarters of the sofa's width. A vertical painting can still work on a tall wall, but a horizontal one is the easier fit for a long, low wall above a sofa.
What size is a panoramic canvas?
There is no single standard size. In practice, a panoramic canvas is one whose long side is at least about twice the short side, such as 200 x 100 cm (79 x 39 in) or wider. Amber Strata, at 150 x 100 cm (59.1 x 39.4 in), is a 3:2 landscape format: wide, but not panoramic in that strict sense. The studio does not currently list a 2:1 work.
Why choose an original rather than a reproduction for a wide wall?
The studio sells originals only. An original is a single, unique painting: Amber Strata is mixed media with acrylic on canvas, with layered texture and gold flecks that sit physically on the surface, and that matters most on a wide wall, where the canvas is seen up close and from across the room. It is sold directly by the artist with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, which a reproduction does not carry.
How does Perfeito Studio ship an original painting?
The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available. Shipping is paid by the buyer, as are any import duties or taxes in the destination country. Domestic delivery takes up to 15 business days depending on destination; international shipping is quoted on request, and collecting the work in person after purchase is also possible.
What comes with an original from Perfeito Studio?
Every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes the original painting, a signed Certificate of Authenticity with the technical record and Archive ID, a fiscal invoice or official receipt, an Artwork Acquisition Agreement covering ownership, copyright and image use, an artist dossier, conservation guidance and professional packaging.
