How large is large abstract art? Sizes in cm and inches, wall by wall

No official measurement defines a "large" painting; buyers use the word loosely. In this catalogue, a work is large from about 1 m² of canvas (100 × 100 cm, 39.4 × 39.4 in) and large-scale from about 1.9 m² (120 × 160 cm, 47.2 × 63.0 in). Today the largest original is 120 × 200 cm (47.2 × 78.7 in).

Large is a range, and area tells it better than width

Search for "large abstract art" and the results mix canvases that differ several times over in size, because the word has no fixed definition for a buyer. A gallery, a decorator and a furniture retailer each draw the line somewhere different. What follows is therefore the usage of this studio, not an industry standard, and it is built only from the original works in the collection.

Width and height alone mislead, because the eye reads the surface. A 120 × 200 cm canvas (47.2 × 78.7 in) holds 2.4 m² of painted surface; a 50 × 70 cm canvas (19.7 × 27.6 in) holds 0.35 m². The first is almost seven times the area of the second, although it is only 2.4 times wider. That is why the studio sorts works by area as much as by length: roughly 1 m² and above reads as large, roughly 1.9 m² and above as large-scale.

For conversions, one inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so the inch figures on this page are the centimetre sizes divided by 2.54 and rounded to one decimal place.

The ladder, in centimetres and inches

Every size below is a canvas that exists in the collection today, with dimensions taken from each work's own page. Height comes second in the vertical works, which are most of the catalogue.

Most of the canvases are vertical. Only Amber Strata (150 × 100 cm, 59.1 × 39.4 in) is horizontal, and three works are square at 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in): Amethyst Ground, Prism Garden and Patina Field. For a vertical work, the number to plan around is the width; the height decides what else can share the wall.

Wall by wall: where each size tends to sit

These are working observations from the atelier, not rules. They start from the wall and the furniture, never from the painting, and the neighbouring guides go deeper on the two most common cases.

  • Behind a sofa or a long console: the width of the furniture below sets the scale, so this is where large and large-scale canvases earn their size. See what size painting to hang above a sofa.
  • A full-height wall, a double-height room or a stairwell: a tall vertical such as 120 × 200 cm (47.2 × 78.7 in) fits the proportion of the wall itself. See art for a double-height wall.
  • A corridor, a study, a bedroom or a dining room: a vertical of about 70 × 110 cm (27.6 × 43.3 in) to 90 × 140 cm (35.4 × 55.1 in), or a 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in) square, is usually easier to place than a very tall canvas.

Test the size on your own wall before you decide

A table of numbers cannot replace the wall. The simplest check costs almost nothing: cut paper or lining paper to the exact width and height, tape it up with masking tape that lifts cleanly, and live with it for a couple of days. Look at it from the doorway, from where you sit, and from the far end of the room, at different times of day.

Three questions settle most doubts. Does the shape leave breathing room on all four sides, or does it touch the corners of the wall? Does it relate to the furniture below, or float above it? Does the proportion, tall, wide or square, suit the wall you actually have? In the studio's experience, if the paper already feels too big, the canvas rarely feels smaller once painted. If it feels timid, step up one row of the ladder.

From the studio

From the atelier: the wall is read in plan first

I trained as an architect, so I read a room in plan before I read it in photographs, and the first question I ask about a canvas is how much of the wall it will take. Most of the collection is vertical, and the largest piece, Genesis of Flame, is 200 cm tall. At that scale the work stops being an object on a wall and starts to meet the viewer's body, which no image on a screen conveys.

The same logic runs the other way. Silent Interval (120 × 160 cm, 47.2 × 63.0 in) needs a large field of calm around it to do its work, and Fire of Devotion (100 × 150 cm, 39.4 × 59.1 in) is a 2:3 vertical, 100 cm wide. I would rather talk through a measured wall than sell a size by feel.

Frequently asked

What size counts as a large painting?

There is no official threshold, and sellers use the word differently. In this studio's catalogue, a work is large from about 1 m² of canvas, for example 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in) or 100 × 150 cm (39.4 × 59.1 in), and large-scale from about 1.9 m², such as 120 × 160 cm (47.2 × 63.0 in). Treat these as the studio's own working bands rather than an industry standard.

How do you test a large canvas on a wall?

Cut paper or lining paper to the exact width and height of the canvas and fix it with masking tape. Leave it up for a couple of days and look at it from the doorway, from your usual seat and from the far end of the room. Check the margin around it, its relation to the furniture below and whether the proportion suits the wall.

What is the difference between buying an original and a print for this?

Perfeito Studio sells original paintings only. Each is a single unique canvas, so it exists at one size and that size is fixed before you buy. That is why measuring the wall first matters here: the work cannot be scaled up or down afterwards. Each original is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity carrying its full technical record and Archive ID.

How does Perfeito Studio ship an original painting?

The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Shipping is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are any import duties or taxes in the destination country. Professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available. Domestic delivery takes up to 15 business days depending on destination, and international shipping is quoted on request. Collection in person after purchase is also possible.

What comes with an original from Perfeito Studio?

Every acquisition is made directly from the artist and includes the original painting, a signed certificate of authenticity with the technical record and Archive ID, a fiscal invoice or official receipt, an acquisition agreement covering transfer of ownership, copyright and image use, an artist dossier, conservation and care guidance, and professional packaging. The certificate carries a QR code linking to the work's official page.

Send the wall's measurements and a photo

Tell the studio the width and height of the free wall and what sits below it, and it will say which original in the collection fits, or whether none does.
