How much does a large abstract painting cost?

At this studio, large original abstract paintings, from roughly one square meter of canvas up, cost R$ 5,200 to R$ 8,800, from 100 × 100 cm to 120 × 200 cm. That covers the painting, its documentation and packaging. Freight, transit insurance and any import duties are separate and quoted by destination.

This studio's range for large abstract paintings

The studio publishes a price for every work, so the range below is read straight from the catalogue rather than estimated. A selection of the larger formats, from about one square meter of canvas upward:

These are prices in Brazilian reais. Any conversion into dollars or euros is only approximate and moves with the exchange rate, so this page does not fix one. This page does not offer a market-wide range for large abstract paintings either: a single figure would hide the variables that actually set the price, starting with who painted it and how.

What goes into the price of a large painting

Four things sit inside the price of a large original. Surface and material follow size most directly; the other three matter more than the square meters suggest.

Surface and material. Area grows faster than the longest side. A 120 × 200 cm canvas is 2.4 square meters; a 60 × 80 cm canvas is 0.48, five times less. More surface means more canvas, more pigment and more passes of work.

The support. A large canvas needs a stretcher that stays true under tension. One stretcher-bar supplier recommends adding cross braces to bars longer than 36 in (about 91 cm) and specifies heavier profiles for very large frames. The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that large stretchers may carry cross bars joined to the outer frame, with keys beside the joint. In practice that is more wood, more joinery and more weight to handle, so it is worth asking how a large canvas is built.

Time. A layered painting takes more working sessions than a single pass of paint, and a larger surface has more of each stage to cover.

Documentation. At this studio every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes a signed certificate of authenticity with the Archive ID, an invoice or official receipt, an acquisition agreement, an artist dossier, care guidance and professional packaging. None of that depends on the size of the canvas. For the arithmetic, see how buyers should read price per square meter.

Is a bigger painting always more expensive per centimeter?

Not in this catalogue. Within the Heart of Chaos series, Origin of Light (60 × 80 cm, 0.48 m²) is R$ 3,300. Fire of Devotion (100 × 150 cm, 1.5 m²) is R$ 5,700. Genesis of Flame (120 × 200 cm, 2.4 m²) is R$ 8,800.

Between the smallest and the largest of the three, the canvas area grows five times, while the price grows by about two and two-thirds. Price still rises with size; it does not rise in a straight line. The work-by-work arithmetic is in how buyers should read price per square meter.

Size alone also does not fix the number. At the same 1.5 m² of canvas, the catalogue runs from R$ 5,700 to R$ 6,700 depending on the series and the work, so compare a painting with others by the same artist before comparing it with anyone else's. The longer treatment is in how to tell if a painting is fairly priced.

What the price leaves out: freight, crate, insurance, duties

The price on the page is for the painting. Getting a large work to a wall adds costs that scale with its volume rather than its beauty.

  • Freight. A large crate is priced by the space it takes as well as by what it weighs, so ask the carrier how the shipment will be billed. At this studio, shipping is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer; domestic delivery takes up to 15 business days depending on destination, and international shipping is quoted on request.
  • Crating. Professional packaging is included in this studio's price. Where it is not included, a custom crate built for a large canvas is a separate line item, so ask whether it is quoted on its own.
  • Insurance. Transit insurance is available. Ask for it to be itemized, together with the value it is declared at and what it covers while the work is in transit.
  • Import duties and taxes. For international buyers these are paid by the buyer in the destination country and depend on that country's rules. This page does not estimate them; shipping original art internationally from Brazil explains the mechanism.

Two practical checks come before the price: whether the painting fits through your door and lift, covered in will a large painting fit in the elevator, and how the crate is built, covered in how a crate is built for an international art shipment. This text is informational and is not tax or customs advice.

Questions to ask before buying a large work

For a large painting the useful questions are specific, and a serious seller can answer each in a line:

  • What is the exact size, the medium and the Archive ID or equivalent record?
  • How is the canvas supported, and what does it weigh once packed?
  • Is packaging included, and what is quoted separately: freight, insurance, duties?
  • What documentation comes with it: certificate, receipt, agreement?
  • Can I see detail photographs, or a short video, before I commit?

For buyers outside Brasília, the studio sends additional detail photographs and video of a specific work on request over WhatsApp. For the wider question of what an original is worth to you, see is original art worth the price and how much original art costs across all sizes.

At 120 × 200 cm, Genesis of Flame is no longer an object you carry. It is something you plan around: the wall it will hang on, the route it takes to get there, the clearance at the door. I trained as an architect, and my work sits between architecture and abstraction, so I read a canvas of this scale as part of the room's structure as much as a picture.

The price beside it, R$ 8,800, is the price of the painting, its certificate and its packaging. What it costs to reach a particular wall depends on where that wall is, which is why freight and insurance are quoted for your destination rather than folded into that number.

Frequently asked

How much is a large original abstract painting?

It depends on the artist, the medium and the size, so any single market figure is a weak guide. At Perfeito Studio, the works of about one square meter of canvas and up are priced from R$ 5,200 for 100 × 100 cm to R$ 8,800 for 120 × 200 cm. Prices are in Brazilian reais; a dollar or euro equivalent is only approximate and shifts with the exchange rate.

How does size change the price?

Area grows faster than the longest side, so more canvas, material and working time go into a large painting. In this catalogue, price rises with size but not proportionally: across three works in one series, the area grows five times while the price grows about two and two-thirds times. Series, medium and technique also move the number, so size is a first filter, not the whole answer.

Is bigger always more expensive per centimeter?

In Heart of Chaos, larger works cost less per square meter than smaller ones: the 60 × 80 cm work is about R$ 6,900 per square meter, while the 120 × 200 cm work is about R$ 3,700. That is how this catalogue behaves; other artists price differently, so compare within one artist's work first.

What extra costs come with a large painting?

Freight, transit insurance and, for international buyers, import duties and taxes in the destination country. At this studio, professional packaging is included, shipping is quoted by destination and paid by the buyer, and domestic delivery takes up to 15 business days depending on destination. International shipping is quoted on request. Ask for every item to be itemized before you decide.

How do I know the price is fair?

Compare the work with others by the same artist at a similar scale, confirm it is an original with a signed certificate and a record such as an Archive ID, and ask what is and is not included. A published price makes that comparison possible. A vague price on request is a reason to ask more questions, not fewer. This page does not claim any painting will rise in value.
