Majlis wall art: choosing an original abstract painting for a majlis

In the studio's reading, a majlis wall suits one large abstract original on the axis of the longest seating wall, in a palette that sits with the upholstery. Quartz Seam, 98 × 152 cm, is shown that way below. UNESCO describes a majlis as a large room with cushions set against the wall, which leaves the wall above the seating as its main open surface.

What a majlis wall asks of a painting

Quartz Seam (98 × 152 cm, Terra & Ether, 2026) is mixed media with acrylic and imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf) on canvas. Its catalogue description says the pigment is laid thick enough to carry its own relief and then bounded rather than blended, so each field of colour keeps its edge, and thin seams of metallic leaf mark where one field meets the next. The metallic leaf is sealed with a spray sealant.

UNESCO's entry for the majlis describes a large room with carpets on the floor and cushions set against the wall, used to host guests and to discuss local events; it also notes that women have their own majlis. For a painting, the studio's practical reading is geometry: the seating hugs the walls, and the wall above it is the room's main open surface. The mockup above shows that arrangement, a long run of low seating, a central wall and one vertical painting on its axis. It is a digital visualisation of a room, not a photograph of one.

Alyne Perfeito is an emerging Brazilian visual artist and trained architect based in Brasília; her current body of work was painted in 2025 and 2026. Every painting is a single, unique work.

Scale: a long wall and a low seat

A rule of thumb from the Fine Art America blog, a print retailer's guide written for sofas, suggests art about two-thirds of the sofa's width (two-thirds to three-quarters looks intentional), with 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the frame, and the centre of the artwork 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. A majlis breaks the premise: the seating runs along the wall as one continuous band, as in the mockup, so a single canvas rarely reaches that ratio against the whole run. Three readings, offered as the studio's and not as rules:

  • Take the central seating module as the unit. Measure the section of seating directly below the painting, not the whole run, and apply the ratio to that.
  • Follow the run with a horizontal work. Amber Strata, 150 × 100 cm (R$ 6,700), is built in horizontal passages, and its description says the eye is meant to travel sideways, the way it reads a stratum or a slow shoreline. On a long wall that is the direction of travel.
  • Anchor the axis with a vertical work. Quartz Seam, 98 × 152 cm (R$ 6,700), interrupts the horizontal line of the seating with a single vertical, as in the mockup.

Because people sit low in a majlis, the 57-to-60-inch retail rule of thumb is a starting point only: tape the proposed size to the wall and look at it from a seated position on the cushions before deciding the height.

Colour, imitation gold leaf and light

The mockup room is upholstered in cream, grey, dusty rose and pale blue. The catalogue text for Quartz Seam names dusty rose, charcoal and a cool grey; in the mockup and in the detail photograph the fields read as plum, lilac-grey and pale blue. Those sit close to the cushions' dusty rose, grey and pale blue, with the plum as the deeper note. That is the studio's reading of this one digital visualisation; a different majlis, with deeper upholstery, would ask a different work.

The gold in Quartz Seam is imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf), not real gold. It appears as thin seams rather than as a field, so the wall reads as colour with a metallic line, not as a gilded surface. Whether a gold accent belongs in a particular majlis is the household's decision; this page does not claim a rule.

Light matters because the surface is built in relief. The National Gallery in London defines raking light as light from one side only, at an oblique angle, and says it makes a painting's surface texture visible. In the mockup the windows sit on the side walls, so daylight crosses the central wall at an angle; in the detail photograph above, the seams stand off the canvas and would catch it. Mockups show proportion and mood, not the real colour or light of your room; additional detail photographs and video of a specific work are available on request.

Smaller works for the walls around the majlis

Not every wall in the house is the long wall. For an entrance, a corridor or a smaller reception room, the scale changes. Golden Passage (60 × 80 cm, Black & Gold, 2025; mixed media, texture paste and imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf) on canvas, R$ 3,500) carries a diagonal flow of sculpted forms across a black field, with fragments of metallic leaf. Celestial Plan (50 × 70 cm, same series and technique, R$ 2,700) is built from fine concentric textures on black. Both are abstract paintings with no figurative imagery.

UNESCO notes that women have their own majlis. The studio cites no rule on art for any particular majlis; the choice belongs to whoever owns the room, and a smaller work like these two suits a smaller room.

For anyone acquiring: scale, light, documents and shipping

  • Scale to the furniture. Measure the seating module below the wall and the height from the floor to the top of the seat back, then set them against the ratios above. Dimensions on each work's page are listed width by height, in centimetres.
  • Light. Note where the windows and any cove lighting fall relative to the wall; relief reads differently as the light moves.
  • Distance. UNESCO calls a majlis a large space, so expect a long viewing distance. Look at the wall from the far seating, not only from the doorway.
  • Documents. Every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity with the full technical record and the Archive ID, an invoice or official receipt, an Artwork Acquisition Agreement covering ownership, copyright and image use, an artist dossier, care guidance and professional packaging.
  • Shipping. The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Freight is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are any import duties or taxes in the destination country. Professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available; international shipping is quoted on request (details on the shipping page). How the UAE and Saudi Arabia treat an imported original painting is covered in our guides to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and for Dubai buyers in buying from a Brazilian studio.
  • Price. Each work's price is on its page, in Brazilian reais; the current works run from R$ 2,400 to R$ 8,800. Any conversion to your own currency is approximate.

From the studio

From the studio

I trained as an architect, so I read a majlis wall as a horizon: a long horizontal band of seating with a calm surface above it. That is why I think of two kinds of work for it. Amber Strata continues the horizon, a field of warm light built in horizontal passages that the eye reads sideways. Quartz Seam does the opposite and stands on the axis, with its seams running through the colour like veins through rock.

Quartz Seam is built in weight: pigment is laid thick enough to hold its own relief, and its metallic leaf is sealed with a spray sealant. In the mockup the windows sit on the side walls, so the light crosses the wall at an angle, which suits a surface that has relief to show.

Frequently asked

What kind of painting suits a majlis?

In the studio's reading, a large original on the axis of the longest seating wall suits a majlis, in a palette that sits with the upholstery. UNESCO describes the room as large, with cushions set against the wall, which leaves that wall as the main open surface. The studio's mockup shows Quartz Seam (98 × 152 cm, R$ 6,700) in that position. Abstract works carry no figurative imagery. Other choices are the household's own.

How large should a painting be on a majlis wall?

A print retailer's guide written for sofas suggests about two-thirds of the sofa's width, with the centre of the work 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. A majlis has a long continuous run of seating, so one canvas rarely reaches that ratio against the whole run. Apply the ratio to the seating module below the painting, test the size with tape, and judge the height from a seated position.

Is a gold accent appropriate in a majlis?

The gold leaf in Quartz Seam, Golden Passage and Celestial Plan is imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf), not real gold, and it is sealed with a spray sealant. In Quartz Seam it appears as thin seams between fields of colour, not as a gilded surface. Whether a gold accent belongs in a particular majlis is for the household to decide; this page does not claim a rule.

Are there rules on art for a particular majlis?

There is no rule the studio can cite. UNESCO's entry notes that women have their own majlis. The choice per room belongs to whoever owns it. As a practical matter each room has its own walls, light and furniture, so each gets its own measurements and its own work. A smaller work suits a smaller room.

Can a large painting be shipped to the UAE or Saudi Arabia?

The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Freight is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are import duties or taxes in the destination country. Professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available. International shipping is quoted on request, so ask with your address. How each country treats an imported painting is covered in the linked UAE and Saudi Arabia guides.
