Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens on 11 December 2026: what is known about Gehry's museum

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on 11 December 2026 in the Saadiyat Cultural District, in a building designed by the late Frank Gehry. Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism confirmed the date on 28 July 2026, according to Khaleej Times. Reported figures are 30 galleries, 11,600 m² of interior gallery space and 80,000 m² built-up.

What has been announced

Genesis of Flame is painted on a canvas of 120 x 200 cm, in acrylic and metallic pigment with a gloss and matte finish, and the first thing it asks of a room is a wall: 1.2 m wide and 2 m tall, with space around it. A museum is built around the same question at a different scale, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has now put a date on its answer.

As read on 24 October 2026, Khaleej Times reports that Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism confirmed on 28 July 2026 that the museum opens to the public on 11 December 2026. The building was designed by the late Frank Gehry, described in the report as a Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate. The reported figures are:

  • 30 galleries, connected by a central atrium;
  • 11,600 m² of interior gallery space, plus 23,000 m² of outdoor exhibition areas;
  • 80,000 m² built-up area in total;
  • ten sculptural cones rising up to 88 m, nine clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass, which the report says provide natural ventilation and shade.

Artprice, reporting the same date, describes it as the largest institution in the Guggenheim network worldwide. The museum is a separate project from the other Guggenheims in New York, Venice and Bilbao named in the Khaleej Times report; for a visitor's comparison of two of them, see MoMA or Guggenheim: which to visit.

Where it sits: the Saadiyat Cultural District

The museum stands in the heart of the cultural district on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. According to Khaleej Times, its neighbours in the Saadiyat Cultural District are Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. That is the list the report gives; other venues may exist or open nearby, and this page does not extend it.

For a reader planning around the opening, two cautions apply. The date is an announced date, and it is future until 11 December 2026: confirm it with the museum or the Department of Culture and Tourism before booking travel. And this page does not cover tickets, hours or admission, which are operational details that change and that the sources read here do not state.

The collection: what the report says, and what is not yet published

The Khaleej Times report says the artworks will span paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, moving images and new media. Art since 1960 is to be organised around themes, among them Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling, with displays linking works across geographies, generations and practices rather than following a linear chronology.

What has not been published in the sources read is a list of works. The same report says more information about the collection and commissions is expected to be announced in the coming months, so no individual painting, artist or loan can honestly be named yet. A page that did name them would be guessing.

For those acquiring a work: a museum wall is not a home wall

Perfeito Studio, in Brasília, has no relationship with Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and nothing on this page suggests that any work by Alyne Perfeito will be shown there. The museum is a reference point for scale, not a channel. What a collector buying for a private wall can use from it is the habit of asking what the wall needs.

Scale. Genesis of Flame, at 120 x 200 cm, is the largest work in the catalogue and needs a tall, clear wall; Silent Interval measures 120 x 160 cm and Elemental Veins 90 x 140 cm, so the choice follows the wall. Light. In the studio's experience, a gloss and matte finish such as that of Genesis of Flame shifts with the angle of light, so detail photographs and video of a specific work are sent on request over WhatsApp. Documents. Each acquisition is direct from the artist and includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity with an Archive ID and a QR code to the work's official page, a fiscal invoice or receipt, an Acquisition Agreement, a dossier and care guidance. Shipping. The studio ships within Brazil and internationally; freight is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are import duties and taxes at the destination. International shipping is quoted on request. See the shipping page and, for the UAE specifically, buying from a Brazilian studio for a Dubai wall.

From the studio

From the studio: reading a building as an architect

I am trained as an architect, so news of a Gehry building registers first as a question about walls: where the light falls, how far a viewer can stand back, what a surface does when it is read from across a room. In my experience, Genesis of Flame at 120 x 200 cm reads best from some distance, where the red nucleus holds as one event; at close range the gloss and matte passages separate into texture.

A museum designs that distance for hundreds of visitors at once. A house designs it for one or two people, who see the same wall every morning. That difference is the reason the studio publishes dimensions to the centimetre and sends detail photographs before a sale: the scale has to be right for the room the work will actually live in.
