How does an auction house estimate a work by an artist with no auction record?
With no auction record, a specialist widens the evidence instead of inventing a figure: sales by similar artists, the artist's primary-market record, and the work's own medium, size and condition. The honest output is a range with the reasoning shown, and at Sotheby's the confidential reserve must be set at or below its low end.
What an estimate is built from, and what one painting's record gives a specialist
Silent Interval (2026) is a field of warm bone-white over a textured ground that has been worked and scored. A single dark line descends through it, thins, scatters into fine droplets and settles into one weighted pool, while a block of blue anchors the lower edge. Before a specialist can estimate a painting like this, it has to be reduced to the fields a catalogue entry can carry.
Sotheby's describes an estimate as a low and a high figure representing its experts' opinion of the range in which a lot might sell, based on examination of the item and recent auction records of comparable pieces. Its selling guide lists what specialists evaluate: the artist or maker, country of origin, provenance, date of execution, materials, dimensions, rarity, subject matter or type, and condition, together with comparable sales and the past performance of works by the same and similar artists.
Most of those fields can be filled for Silent Interval from the studio's own record: maker Alyne Perfeito; created in Brazil; 2026; mixed media with acrylic on canvas; 120 x 160 cm (47.2 x 63 in); an abstract composition; a unique original with no editions or reproductions; Archive ID AP-MAS-2026-003. The work's page also carries a provenance line (created by the artist in Brazil and held in the studio's archive until acquisition) and a condition line, with detailed condition images on request. What the record cannot supply is the field a house weighs most heavily: earlier auction results for the same artist.
Sotheby's adds that pre-sale estimates are a guide, that lots can realise prices above or below them, and that estimates exclude the buyer's premium, any overhead premium, Artist's Resale Right and VAT.
With no auction record: what replaces the missing comparable
In the Sotheby's material read for this page the method is general, with no separate procedure for an artist who has no results of their own. Two other practitioners describe what happens when comparables run thin. LLB Auction, an auction house, writes that when direct results are absent the specialist widens to closely related works, the same artist in another medium, or primary-market and gallery pricing, then adjusts more heavily and quotes a wider range. It adds that claiming there are no comparables without that search is a shortcut.
Masterworks, an art-investment platform, describes the same move in more detail. Appraisers demote comparable sales from a pricing engine to a contextual tool and triangulate: they look to analog artists of a similar generation, movement and critical standing; they collect primary-market intelligence from galleries and dealers; where the market is essentially absent they fall back on replacement cost as a floor; and the report leans on narrative, presents a value range rather than a false point estimate, and discloses how thin the data is.
These are descriptions of practice by two outside sources, not the published rules of any one house. They also show which inputs an artist at the start of a trajectory can and cannot supply. Exhibition history or critical reception may not exist yet, and a specialist then leans on the inputs that do: the work itself, its documentation and whatever primary-market evidence is available.
The primary-market price: evidence of one kind
Masterworks calls the record of what actually sold and what sat unsold in primary-market channels more useful than asking prices that never reached a database. A studio's list price is an asking price. Perfeito Studio sets its prices in Brazilian real and, as its citation notes say, does not set or quote secondary-market values. This page makes no statement about any sale or auction history of Alyne Perfeito's work, and nothing on it is a forecast of an auction result.
What the studio does publish is a consistent record for each work. Three examples, with the medium worded exactly as the studio declares it:
| Work | Series | Year | Medium (as declared) | Dimensions | Archive ID | Studio price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silent Interval | Matter & Silence | 2026 | Mixed media with acrylic on canvas | 120 x 160 cm (47.2 x 63 in) | AP-MAS-2026-003 | R$ 7,900 |
| Quartz Seam | Terra & Ether | 2026 | Mixed media with acrylic and imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf) on canvas | 98 x 152 cm (38.6 x 59.8 in) | AP-TAE-2026-007 | R$ 6,700 |
| Fire of Devotion | Heart of Chaos | 2026 | Acrylic on canvas | 100 x 150 cm (39.4 x 59.1 in) | AP-HOC-2026-003 | R$ 5,700 |
The differences are the kind a cataloguer records. Quartz Seam declares imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf), which the studio says is sealed with a spray sealant, so the line describing it says imitation gold leaf (metallic leaf), as the record does, not gold. Fire of Devotion declares acrylic on canvas alone. Silent Interval declares mixed media with acrylic. Reading the medium line literally is what keeps one work's wording from drifting into another's.
Reserve, estimate and what a thin record changes
At Sotheby's the seller's contract sets the reserve: the confidential minimum price agreed between the consignor and the house. Reserves must be set at or below the low estimate. If bidding ends before the reserve is reached, the lot is bought in, which means it stays unsold and remains the owner's property. The estimate is the visible number and the reserve the hidden one.
A thin record has one further effect on how results are read. Masterworks points out that bought-in lots usually vanish from price databases or appear without a price, so a failure to sell at estimate, a strong negative signal, is the signal a database deletes. It concludes that thin comparables are a reason to trust a number less, to ask for a range, and to treat the width of the range as the real disclosure of risk. For a specialist, a curator or an art advisor reading an unfamiliar name, that argues for asking what the range rests on rather than for comparing the headline figures alone.

For those acquiring: documents, scale, valuation and shipping
Documents. Every acquisition is direct from the artist and includes the original, unique painting; a signed Certificate of Authenticity carrying the full technical record and the internal Archive ID; a fiscal invoice or official receipt; an Artwork Acquisition Agreement covering transfer of ownership, copyright and image use; an artist dossier with biography, series context and technical record; conservation and care guidance; and professional packaging. The certificate carries a QR code linking to the work's official page, so provenance can be checked at any time.
Scale and light. Silent Interval is 120 cm wide and 160 cm high (47.2 x 63 in). The studio's care guidance is to hang a work in a dry, stable environment, away from direct sunlight, humidity and forced-air vents. Detail photographs and short video of a specific work are available on request.
Valuation. Sotheby's distinguishes an auction estimate from a valuation, the latter used for charitable contributions, collateral loans, estate taxes, estate planning and insurance. If an advisor needs a value for one of those purposes, it is a separate document from the studio's price and from any estimate. The studio's record gives a price and a technical record, not a valuation.
Shipping. The studio ships within Brazil and internationally. Shipping is quoted per destination and paid by the buyer, as are any import duties or taxes in the destination country; professional packaging is included and transit insurance is available. Details are on the shipping page. Curators and gallery programmers can start from the studio's page for galleries and curators.
From the studio
From the studio: what the record is meant to hold
Alyne Perfeito is a Brazilian visual artist and trained architect based in Brasília. Her current body of work was painted between 2025 and 2026 and is organised in six concurrent series; it is the studio's first documented body of work. In Matter & Silence the ground is worked and scored, and that scored ground is the part a catalogue photograph flattens. For anyone weighing a work without a market record, the detail photographs and video the studio sends on request let the surface be read directly, alongside the fields in the table above.
The studio's prices are asking prices in Brazilian real for unique works. It does not set or quote secondary-market values, and a record like this one is meant to hold only what can be checked: the medium as declared, the dimensions in both units, the year, the Archive ID and the documents that accompany the work.
Frequently asked
What does a specialist use as comparables when there is no auction history?
Sotheby's lists comparable sales and the past performance of works by the same and similar artists. Where the artist has no results of their own, LLB Auction, an auction house, describes widening to closely related works, the same artist in another medium, or primary-market and gallery pricing, and adjusting more heavily. Masterworks describes analog artists of a similar generation, movement and critical standing. These describe practice, not a published procedure of any one house.
Does the primary-market price matter to the estimate?
It can be one input. Masterworks says appraisers collect primary-market intelligence from galleries and dealers and finds what actually sold and what sat unsold more useful than asking prices alone. A studio's list price is an asking price. Perfeito Studio sets its prices in Brazilian real and does not set or quote secondary-market values, so nothing on this page should be read as a forecast of an auction result.
Why is an estimate for a thin record shown as a wider range?
LLB Auction writes that when comparables are thin the defensible output is a wider range with the reasoning explained, and that a tight figure built on two stale results is a guess. Masterworks makes the same point: a precise number built on little data has fictional precision, while a range discloses how thin the data is. Sotheby's separately calls any estimate a guide, with lots able to sell above or below it.
Who sets the reserve?
At Sotheby's the seller's contract sets the reserve, the confidential minimum agreed between the consignor and the house. Reserves must be set at or below the low estimate. If bidding does not reach it, the lot is bought in: it is not sold and stays with the owner. Other houses publish their own terms, so check the conditions of the specific sale.
Can the artist's studio provide price evidence?
It can provide the studio's own record. For each work the page gives title, series, year, medium, dimensions in centimetres and inches, Archive ID and a price in Brazilian real set by the studio. Each acquisition includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity with the technical record, and detail photographs and video are sent on request. The studio does not set or quote secondary-market values.
Does an estimate include the buyer's premium?
At Sotheby's, no: pre-sale estimates exclude the buyer's premium, any overhead premium, Artist's Resale Right and VAT. Premium rates differ by house and change over time, and each house lists them on its own buyer's-premium page, which is why this page gives no rate.
